Manufacturing & Tooling Engineer
Location: Onsite - Los Angeles, CA
Compensation: $90,000 - $110,000 annually (depending on experience)
About the Role
We’re looking for a manufacturing engineer who thrives on turning a repeatability problem into a physical design solution. This role is fundamentally about production: how something gets built the same way, to the same quality, every single time. You’ll spend the majority of your time designing, building, and refining the jigs, fixtures, and assembly aids that make that possible — mostly in-house, from concept through fabrication and validation on the line.
This is a hands-on, floor-facing role. You’ll work shoulder-to-shoulder with the people actually building our products, watching how a fixture performs in practice and iterating until it holds up. A smaller share of the job involves custom equipment that’s better built by an outside vendor — when that’s the case, you’ll own writing clear design and requirement specs so a vendor can quote and build accurately, and you’ll manage that relationship through delivery and acceptance.
You’ll also partner closely with our in-house QC team to define and enforce the process controls that keep assembly repeatable — work instructions, inspection criteria, and the kind of process discipline that matters in a regulated hardware environment. We’re looking for someone who’s comfortable moving quickly, solving problems with their hands, and staying curious about new tools and methods without needing a playbook handed to them.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, and iterate jigs, fixtures, and assembly aids in-house to support repeatable, high-quality assembly processes
Own the full lifecycle of production tooling: concept, CAD design, fabrication/machining coordination, and validation on the production floor
Identify where a fixture, jig, or piece of equipment could reduce variation, cycle time, or operator burden, and translate that into a working design
For the smaller share of equipment sourced externally, author clear design and requirement specifications so vendors can accurately quote and build to spec
Manage vendor relationships for outsourced custom equipment — sourcing, quoting, timeline tracking, and acceptance testing when equipment arrives
Partner with the in-house QC team to define, document, and enforce process controls: work instructions, inspection criteria, and process capability
Troubleshoot fixture and tooling issues on the floor, iterating designs based on operator feedback and real failure modes
Support process validation activities for new fixtures and equipment introduced into production
Maintain clear documentation and revision control on fixture and tooling drawings
Required Qualifications
2+ years of professional experience in a mechanical design, manufacturing, or tooling engineering role
Strong mechanical design skills, with proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks) for jig, fixture, and tooling design
Comfortable designing and building things yourself — machining, 3D printing, or hand-fabricating fixtures rather than staying purely on paper
Working knowledge of design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA), tolerancing, and basic material selection for tooling
Ability to take an ambiguous process problem and independently drive it to a working physical solution
Experience writing clear technical specifications that an outside vendor can execute against
Comfort managing vendor relationships — quotes, timelines, and technical reviews
Experience (or strong interest in) partnering with quality/QC to define and hold process standards
A bias toward being on the production floor solving problems in person, not just at a desk
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a regulated hardware environment (medical device, dental, or similar) where documentation and process repeatability matter
Background in a high-mix or fast-evolving production environment where tooling needs change often
Prior experience specifying and qualifying custom automation equipment from concept through installation
Employment Type
Full-time
