Director of Design (Software)

Location: Los Angeles, CA
Compensation: $180,000 - $200,000 + bonus

About the Role

SprintRay is the market leader in dental 3D printing — $150M+ in revenue, dominant share, and scaling toward IPO. We build the full stack: hardware, software, materials, and workflow. Our product surface is growing fast, and it's mostly software.

We're hiring a Head of Design to lead and scale our design function. You'll own design quality across our software products — the interfaces clinicians and lab techs use every day — and manage a growing team that spans LA and Hangzhou. This role reports directly to the CPO.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end design for SprintRay's software products: iPad apps, workflow tools, AI-powered interfaces, and cloud-connected device management

• Manage and mentor designers across LA (Tyler, Yoobin) and a growing China team (Hangzhou)

• Define and uphold design quality standards — from concept to shipped product

• Partner with PMs and engineers to move fast without sacrificing UX integrity

• Drive design systems and consistency across a multi-product portfolio

• Recruit additional design talent as we scale

• Collaborate closely with the Head of Product Management on joint roadmap and design decisions

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years in product/UX design; 2+ years leading design teams

• Software-first design sensibility — you think in flows, states, and interaction patterns, not just pixels

• Deep experience designing for tablet/iPad or touch-first interfaces preferred

• Strong portfolio of shipped software products; medtech or device-connected software a strong plus

• Able to operate across design disciplines (UX, UI, information architecture) without needing to be hands-on in brand or industrial design

• Excellent communicator — can present design rationale to non-designers and hold a strong point of view

• Experience with cross-cultural or distributed design teams preferred

Scope & Focus

The majority of SprintRay's product investment over the coming years is software: AI-powered workflows, cloud-connected device interfaces, lab and clinic management tools. This role is built for that future. You do not need a brand design or industrial design background — we have those capabilities covered. What we need is someone who can set the quality bar for software design and build a team capable of meeting it.
